Understanding the Kinetics of Protein Digestion in Swine Nutrition

By Bruno Bertaud, Global Swine Technical Manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition

The kinetics of protein digestion is a crucial aspect of swine nutrition, particularly for piglets around the weaning period. It refers to the speed at which proteins are broken down and absorbed by the body. Faster and more efficient digestion processes are essential for the growth and health of piglets.

During weaning, piglets face significant challenges. Their digestive systems are still developing, and they require proteins that are easily digestible and quickly absorbed. Failure to meet these nutritional needs can result in deficiencies and health issues, impacting their overall development.

Protein digestibility is a well-known parameter among nutritionists, indicating the global bioavailability of proteins in feed ingredients. However, it does not account for the timing of absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, which is where the kinetics of protein digestion become important. Both digestibility and kinetics must be considered to ensure optimal nutrition for piglets.

Slow protein digestion poses several risks. Undigested proteins can reach the large intestine, leading to proteolytic fermentations. These fermentations produce harmful metabolites such as biogenic amines and ammonia, which can damage the gut barrier and affect piglet health. This can result in poor growth performance and increased susceptibility to diseases.

YELA PROSECURE, a specifically designed hydrolyzed yeast, offers a nutritional solution to these challenges. It contains high levels of free amino acids and small peptides, designed for easy and quick absorption. Thanks to its contribution to the kinetics of protein digestion, YELA PROSECURE helps reduce the amount of undigested protein reaching the large intestine, thereby limiting under fermentation and supporting overall gut health and welfare of the piglets.

In addition to highly digestible proteins, YELA PROSECURE includes fermentable dietary fibers, vitamins, and minerals. These fibers not only provide energy but also support gut health, contributing to the piglet's overall digestibility welfare. This combination makes YELA PROSECURE a comprehensive and effective nutritional solution.

Understanding and optimizing the kinetics of protein digestion is essential for enhancing piglet nutrition and gut health. By addressing both protein digestibility and kinetics of protein digestion, we can ensure that piglets receive the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development.
